So, how much e-book reader can $149 get you? Well, Kobo’s eReader might not be heavy on the feature set, but based on the general impressions from Electronista’s review, we’d say quite a bit. In exchange for dropping the 3G, WiFi, color screen and audio playback frills of the Kindle and Nook, Kobo’s barebones device puts a pretty and intuitive face on simple book reading for a pretty lovable price. The biggest complaint hinges around some slow performance when closing and opening books, but with 100 pre-loaded titles and a fairly budget friendly online library, it seems like the device has you covered when it comes to actually reading things. We also covered Kobo in our iPad book and comics roundup, if more hardware isn’t your thing.

Well, well — what’s this? We just got our hands on what looks like an internal HP Slate presentation given to cool down some of the iPad hype amongst HP employees, and it just happens to have specs and pricing details on the elusive Windows 7 tablet. As we’d heard, the Slate will run $549 in its base configuration, which has a 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive multitouch display, a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor with UMA graphics and an accelerator for 1080p video playback (we’re assuming it’s a Broadcom Crystal HD chip), 32GB of flash storage and 1GB of non-upgradeable RAM. There’s also a $599 version with 64GB of storage, and both models will have a five-hour battery, an SDHC slot, two camera, a USB port, a SIM card slot for the optional 3G modem, and a dock connector for power, audio, and HDMI out. Of course, what this spec list doesn’t cover is software, and we still haven’t seen much of how HP plans to make Windows 7 on a full slate device with netbook-class internals perform as smoothly or as intuitively as its demo videos. That’s not a small challenge, especially since the iPad is out now and setting some pretty high expectations for how this new breed of tablets should work. We’ve got our fingers crossed — show us something good, HP.

If that wasn’t enough, the rest of this thing’s spec sheet reads like a wishlist. Headlined by a 3G connection that allows cellular voice calls (crazy, we know!), it also includes a user-replaceable 40Wh battery, an SD card reader, FM radio, GPS, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, MicroUSB connectivity to PCs and USB peripherals, stereo speakers, and dual webcams — a 2 megapixel front-facing unit and a 5 megapixel autofocusing snapper on the back. Multitouch displays will be available in both resistive and capacitive flavors, with the 1,366 x 768 resolution being filled by Google’s snappy Android OS. Oh, and did we mention it will run Flash? Because it will. Full specs and a comparison to its direct competitors await after the break, though we’ve yet to find out when this JooJoo killer will be making its arrival or at what price.

Engineers at North Carolina State University have created a computer chip that holds one terabyte — or 1,000 gigabytes — of data and is no larger than a fingernail. For perspective, that means you could store 20 high-definition DVDs or 250 million pages of text on this tiny chip. According to Computer World, this modern marvel is made possible by a process called selective doping, in which engineers add an impurity to a material in order to change its properties. In this case, it results in a drastic reduction in size.

Not only does this breakthrough affect data storage, but it has implications for ‘green’ technology, too. For example, engineers could use selective doping to build ceramic engines that could withstand higher temperatures. That possible outcome, lead engineer Jagdish “Jay” Narayan says, could lead to better fuel efficiency. Doping could also better solar energy by improving the thermal conductivity of the materials used.

While the potential here for energy conservation is great, we still can’t get over the fact that this chip has more than 50-times the storage capacity of other silicon-based chips. [From: Computer World]

I was incorrect in writing that an install of Essential System Software would take 3.81 GB. As a few of our commenters pointed out, and as is the case, in testing I erroneously tried to install Snow Leopard on a flash drive that already had a version of OSX on it, making the installation much smaller than installing on an empty flash drive. According to readers, installing Snow Leopard on an empty flash drive will take 8.01 GB requiring a 16 GB flash drive. I’m very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

It’s a good idea to have a strategy in place in case of emergencies. If your hard drive tosses you errors, behaves badly or doesn’t even appear, what to do? If programs crash at random, you need to be ready. You can prepare for this by creating a bootable flash drive containing some diagnostic and repair utilities.

This is not meant to replace or in any way affect backing up your hard drive. Time Machine makes it so easy that not having a backup plan is just silly… but so much for the disclaimer.

To make a diagnostic and repair flash drive, I’d suggest buying an 8 GB flash drive, 16 GB flash drive which can be had for around US $20 US $35 these days. When you get it, it probably won’t be formatted for your Macintosh, so plug it in and run Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) to format the flash drive. In doing so, you have a number of choices. With your flash drive highlighted click on Erase and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and give the flash drive a name. Then click on Erase on the bottom right side of the screen and in a few seconds your flash drive will be ready for an operating system.

I inadvertently omitted a step! Click the icon for the drive (not the disk partition — the one that includes the size) and click the Partition tab. Choose “1 Partition” from the pop-up menu, Mac OS Extended on the right, then click Options at the bottom of the screen and make sure “GUID” is the selected partition type. Thanks to everyone who pointed this out.

At this point do the Erase as mentioned above which should look like the following screen shot.

In this example I’m using Snow Leopard, but the idea is the same using Leopard as long as your Mac is running an Intel processor.

Insert your Snow Leopard disc and click on Install Mac OS X. Choose your new flash drive as the destination, but when you get a screen or two in, click on Customize.

When you do you’ll see this screen:

You can see that it’ll take 3.81 GB 8.01 GB (see the update note at the top of the story) to do the simplest installation. Consider what you’ll need on your flash drive and select or deselect whatever you’d like, but I suggest choosing nothing at all. As a diagnostic and repair-only bootable device, you don’t need anything but possibly print drivers and you probably don’t need those. You may want to install Rosetta since it’s only 2 MB, but if you need it later, Snow Leopard will let you know and ask if you want it installed.

Run the installation and busy yourself elsewhere for awhile.

When its done, reboot holding down the option key and you’ll be presented with a list of bootable devices. Choose the flash drive. The welcome movie will play and you’ll need to apply settings as is usual when first running a new Mac or installing a new operating system.

Next run Software Update repeatedly until you get a message telling you that your software is up to date. Now it’s time to install utility software. Disk Utility, already be installed on your flash drive, is often all you need, but along with that I can personally recommend Diskwarrior from Alsoft and TechTool Pro from Micromat. I’ve been using both of those for years and although a lot of functionality is duplicated between these programs, I’ve often had problems that Diskwarrior can fix but Techtools Pro can’t and vice versa. Having both of these in my tool belt along with Disk Utility has gotten me out of serious trouble more times than I’d like to remember.

If you are concerned about running out of space on the flash drive, remember that this is a diagnostic and repair device; you can delete just about all the programs in the application folder. The only ones I have remaining are the three utilities mentioned and Safari. It’s your call.

That’s it, and putting it together sounds much worse than it is. You’ll be set for whatever comes along. Sure you can boot your system disc to run Disk Utility but I’ve found in many cases, I needed a lot more. You can also boot from your utility program discs, but that’s time consuming and it’s possible to run into a problem with the OS on the utility disc not playing nicely with your Mac.

You should know that booting the flash drive will take a long time, so don’t be surprised. The one I have takes longer than booting from a system disc, but when it does come up, I’ve got a really good variety of tools that has served me well.

I have one of these in my computer bag and I’ve used it often at friends houses to get various Macs out of various jams along with using it on the three Macs at home.

Do you use this method already? If you’ve been at it awhile, what do you use when disaster strikes? The comment section is waiting for your horror stories.
